Description
BL ♂: 7.7-9.5 mm; ♀: 8.7-9.5 mm. Base color black, thorax and legs completely black. Forewings usually with a posterior red band and two red spots on each wing (var. typica). Ventral plates of the connexivum red with black spots, these black spots are rarely missing. Body shape long ovoid. Frons in sideview at most slightly exceeding the fore margin of the vertex.
Five more color morphs are distinguished:
- C. sanguinolenta var. basalis (Dominique, 1892): forewings black with only a red spot in the clavus.
- C. sanguinolenta var. egestosa Haupt, 1917: clavus and corium with reduced spots, posterior band normal.
- C. sanguinolenta var. panzeri Le Peletier & Serville, 1825: forewings completely black.
- C. sanguinolenta var. quadripunctata Sabransky, 1912: corium without a red spot.
- C. sanguinolenta var. reducta Melichar, 1913: posterior band reduced to a spot in the clavus.
Genitalia:
- Male aedeagus: shaft long and slightly curved and with a pointed tip; with four spine-like appendages, the outer appendages half as long as inner appendages.
Ecology
Adults between May and July, hibernates in the larval stadium. In a wide variation of habitats with tall vegetation of herbs and grasses. Adults feed on herbs and grasses.
Distribution
Widely distributed in the Mediterranean area and the southern part of Central-Europe.
